A 9-5'er turned DIY content creator. When I'm not tearing down walls and ripping up carpets, you can find me designing and building furniture, watching Marvel movies for the 100th time, and cuddling my goofy Australian Shepherd, Tokyo.
I love learning new skills and obsessing over new hobbies that last a week and hosting dinner parties.

Hi, I'm Maggie

Our moody modern primary bedroom is officially done! Well, it’s been officially done for a few months but I’m finally sharing it with the world. There are a few details I am still working on, but they are a low priority that may or may not be addressed this year. I would love to make custom drapes pleated drapes for the windows using this fabric, add some woven shades, find the perfect rug, and make a custom bench for the space between the closet and bathroom doors.

To bring you back to the beginning, below is a comparison of the before and after layout. The bedroom space was fine, but the closet and bathroom were small and not ideal. In the new layout, we moved the closet and bathroom to one side, and then removed the hallway closet to make for a bigger bedroom. We hired a structural engineer to confirm the walls we wanted to remove were non-load bearing, thankfully they were not!

Here’s another look at what the before looked like:

The Process

We started this project back in February 2023. We removed the carpets ourself and then hired out the demo, framing, electrical, drywall. All of the trade work completed in about a month – if we DIY’ed it, it would probably have taken 3 months! We are grateful to be in a position where we are able to hire it out, it saved us sooo much time and so many labor intensive hours! Know where your limits are!

Once the trade work finished, we primed the walls and gave it a fresh coat of Snowbound by Sherwin-Williams. I didn’t want to add crown moulding in here since we didn’t really have it anywhere else in the home. We wanted to keep it minimal, so we added a chair rail trim to the walls to mimic crown moulding. I used a 2×4 as a spacer and a nail gun to attach it to the wall. Next I taped off the wall and used my favorite Graco paint sprayer to paint the trim and ceiling in In the Midnight Hour by Benjamin Moore.

Once the ceiling is painted, we installed our LVP flooring and then installed all the baseboard and door trim. Again we painted all the trimwork using our Graco sprayer – the GOAT!

I love the fabric for the curtains you want to make! I can’t believe that this is all the same space! I mean, I can because I’ve been watching you do it all, but those before and afters are so drastic! I think the way you chose to utilize the space is so smart. It must be so cool to go to bed every night knowing you made that all possible. Great work Maggie!
